Neuroma (Forefoot Nerve Pain)
Neuroma is an inflamed nerve and associated swelling between the metatarsal heads, often due to compression from footwear or altered foot mechanics. It can cause a lot of sensory change in the toes and extreme pain during and after weightbearing. It often arises from tight footwear but also with poor foot mechanics.
Treatment plans will normally include footwear advice and recommendations, and a custom offloading orthosis to offload and address underlying mechanical issues.
Occasionally neuromas can be chronic and will be referred on for injection therapy or in the worst cases surgery. However, if treated early on they have a high resolution rate with conservative methods.
