Foot Pain and Biomechanics Assessment
This type of treatment is appropriate for those suffering from heel pain, plantar fasciitis, forefoot pain, ankle pain, arch pain, neuroma, bunions and flat feet.
Pain or injury in the foot (feeling like there is something wrong inside the foot as opposed to a skin or nail problem) is often caused by the way we move.
The injury is usually a result of overloading or overworking, due to disruption in wider movement patterns.
We use our knowledge of how feet should function to compare with an assessment of how you move and identify where this problem arises. It could be a muscle weakness, an asymmetrical difference in anatomy, or a result of a previous injury, for example.
What happens in a Foot Pain Assessment?
First, we assess the actual injury or area of pain to arrive at a diagnosis. We will ask you lots of questions about the history of the problem like the duration and the type of pain, and which movement makes it feet worse.
We then assess the functionality of your feet, both non-weightbearing, and weightbearing. Lastly, we assess the dynamic function – i.e. while in movement. This, in combination with your medical and lifestyle history, helps us to arrive at a conclusion about the likely causes of this injury so that we can build a plan to heal the tissues and prevent it from recurring.
What does a typical treatment plan include?
From there, you will normally benefit from a rehab program, but you may also need functional insoles to address weightbearing patterns, and you may need to make footwear changes.
Everyone of our patients receives a report of our findings and recommendations for a treatment plan, together with next steps arrangements.
Additionally, we have Laser therapy available, which is a very helpful adjunct to speed up your healing process.
We work collaboratively with you in identifying areas that you can easily make changes for the greatest effect.
Sometimes we need further information and will ask to refer you for imaging. We have referral partnerships for MRI and Ultrasound scanning, also with a local osteopath, chiropractor, and physiotherapist for help outside of our scope of practice.
